Simple Flower Crochet Pattern

Simple Flower Crochet Pattern
Simple Flower
I saw this flower on Pinterest yesterday and fell in love. Either that or I’m just so sick of making owl hats that I jumped at the opportunity to use my hands to create something different. Regardless, I’m pleased with how this flower crochet pattern came out. I’m not sure it fits into the categories of rosette or daisy… maybe a chrysanthemum (you will not believe this… I spelled that right the first time!)?  Anyways, I’m still trying to put off making owl hats for just a few more minutes so I decided to post about it and let you know exactly how I made mine.

Daisy Granny Square pattern

Granny Square pattern
Granny Square
I’ve always wanted to make a patchwork blanket, but I’ve always been a little bit intimidated by the weaving and joining and time involved in the process. Well, I need to make a birthday gift for a little girl who’s turning 5, and decided that I would make her a baby doll blanket made from this daisy square motif. This daisy granny square is simple, yet beautiful. If you don’t want to make an afghan or baby blanket, they’d also be perfect for coasters.
Want to make some of these adorable squares? Here’s how.

Crochet Caps for a Cause Pattern. Last week I had a new and exciting experience – I became a volunteer at our local hospital.  I originally created this blog to have a creative outlet but I had no idea the impact my readers would have on my life.  All the positive feedback and comments have helped me see that I have an opportunity and an obligation to give back .  My new volunteer job is to create and deliver art and activities for the pediatric and geriatric wards and to make hats and blankets for the maternity and neonatal intensive care units.  I delivered my first big package of materials and hats last week and it felt so amazing to be able to contribute to this wonderful cause.

After making so many changes to owl hat patterns I’ve purchased on Etsy, I’ve finally come up with my own free owl hat crochet pattern that doesn’t resemble them at all (although the eyes are similar… how many ways are there to crochet circles?). Right now, I’ve only written the newborn size, so I’m offering it free on my blog. In the future, I’d love to write and sell some patterns on Etsy, but we’ll just have to see how that goes.

You may have seen the fishbowl hat I posted on Saturday. Thanks so much for all the sweet compliments I’ve received on it. Due to how cute everyone seems to think it is, I have added three more sizes so you can make this adorable little hat for more kiddos in your life.
If you’d like to make your own, it’s easy. The most difficult part will be sewing on all those adorable buttons.

Baby Frog Hat Crochet Pattern

Baby Frog Hat Crochet Pattern
Baby Frog Hat
Since a very early age, I've always had a fascination with frogs.
As a little girl I'd scour our gardens for any signs of croaking life. These little expeditions always involved a sandwich (The food of brave explorers) and a pair of purple and green binoculars dangling around my neck.
After an endless search of roughly 10 minutes I'd spy a pair of froggy eyes peering out behind a water lily. Suddenly the hunt was on! I'd chase those green little legs across the backyard until finally I had captured my prey!... Only to release the poor little frog once I stared into it's lonely little eyes and realised that this little frog might be missing her mummy...

 Crochet flowers
After making some little bow ties over the weekend, I was in the mood to crochet flowers today. This little daisy crochet pattern is very simple – they might take three minutes to whip up. This little flower is a great beginner crochet pattern, too!
These flowers are great for embellishing hats, blankets, and bags. You may recognize them – I’ve used them to embellish the owl and monkey hats I make for a couple of years now (those patterns are available on my free patterns page). This month, though, I’m planning to make 100 bows and/or flowers to donate to Bow Dazzling. Bow Dazzling is an organization that donates hair bows to girls who are fighting cancer or other serious diseases. Check out their Facebook page if you’re interested in making a donation. I’m unbelievably excited to help spread a little cheer to girls who are going through such a rough time.

How to Make a Crochet Slip Knot
Make a Crochet Slip Knot
A slip knot is the first step in most crochet projects. There are multiple ways to create slip knots; this is one possible approach.

These instructions are intended for right-handed crocheters. If you're left-handed, please see how to crochet left-handed.

Materials: You will need a crochet hook plus yarn or crochet thread.

How to Hold the Yarn: Grasp the yarn in your left hand, between your thumb and index finger, and allow the yarn to flow freely over your index finger. Support the yarn with your middle finger. Leave a tail of yarn trailing below your thumb.

Learn half double crochet and double crochet, increasing and decreasing

Learn half double crochet and double crochet, increasing and decreasing
Half double crochet and double crochet
Crochet lesson #2, coming right up! How are we doing so far? Are things making sense? On Monday, we covered the chain stitch and single crochet, and we're moving along today to the next two basic stitches, the half double crochet and double crochet, and a quickie lesson on increasing and decreasing your stitches.

(As a side note, the same stitches go by different terms in the US than they do in the UK, just to make things a little more confusing for you. I'll be using American terminology today and, well, every time I ever talk about crochet. If you're already familiar with or think you'll encounter British terminology more, you can reference this handy little chart for a translation.)

If you're feeling pretty comfortable with the single crochet from our last lesson (click here if you need a review), you should be able to pick up these new stitches pretty easily, since they're just a variation on the single crochet stitch!

Tunisian Crochet How-To… Basic Tunisian Crochet Stitch

Basic Tunisian Crochet Stitch
Basic Tunisian Crochet Stitch
I am going to show you how to Tunisian Crochet. Some of you may have heard of it and others maybe not. Either way, you will learn how to do it today!

Tunisian Crochet is a fabulous way of mixing crocheting and knitting. It’s a back and forth motion of taking stitches on and off the hook with out turning.  And don’t worry if the “knitting” part scares you. I promise you don’t need to know a thing about knitting to do this.

To start off, you need a Tunisian Crochet hook. This is also called an afghan hook.

Colorful Crochet Patterns: How To Crochet a Clean Edge Along a Rough Edge

How To Crochet a Clean Edge Along a Rough Edge
Colorful Crochet Pattern
Maybe it's a blanket border. Maybe it's around a dishcloth or sweater. Or maybe along the edge of a scarf or cowl. But anytime you are instructed in a pattern to "work stitches evenly along edge" you are faced with a challenge. Where do you put your hook? How do you keep the stitches along the back from looking uneven and horrible? Particularly if it is in a contrasting color!

Let me show you what I mean, and then I'll provide you a simple technique to help make it look super neat and tidy--on BOTH SIDES!
